January Extreme Cold

Feb 04, 2019

This may be Minnesota, but last week was very cold. So cold that we broke a Twin Cities lowest wind chill event from January 2014. Although Hennepin West Mesonet stations didn't break the Minnesota lowest air temperature or wind chill record, we came pretty close. During the period of January 27-31, 2019, the Polar Vortex dropped into the midwest, and left a trail of extreme cold all over the region. Our sensors were able to stay functioning and measure temperature and wind chill values that were extremely cold. Below are a few graphs and maps from our stations depicting the temperatures and wind chills during last week.
